Continuing competence refers to the ongoing process of enhancing and maintaining the knowledge, skills, and judgment needed to practice safely and ethically throughout a professional career. It’s a lifelong learning and practice journey that helps individuals stay current with advancements in their field, refine their practice, and ultimately provide the best possible care.
For CMLPSK, continuing competence involves both Continuing Professional Education and Practice hours (recency of practice).
CMLPSK registrants are required to submit a minimum of 30 hours of CPE within the previous 5 years to be eligible for licence renewal. New applicants that are not considered labour mobility or new graduates must supply evidence of the same.
At least 15 hours must be from Category 1 with the remaining 15 hours being either Category 1 or Category 2.
For a full list of activities from both categories, review the Continuing Professional Education Policy and Guidance document.
Each year, CMLPSK conducts a registration compliance audit, where up to 20% of the practicing registrants must validate their CPE and PH submissions.
Notice for Registrants: the CMLPSK office reviews CPE submissions weekly during the licence year and more frequently during renewal season.
Reference: CMLPSK Regulatory Bylaws, Section 11.
Practice hours are a mandatory requirement for licensure.
New applicants (except new graduates) and registrants renewing their licence must have recent practice that is at least 1200 hours in medical laboratory technology activities within the five years. Recent practice or active engagement in the MLT profession enhances a registrants knowledge, skills, and practice competencies.
Approved areas of practice are outlined in the Practice Hours policy and guidance document.

The CMLPSK informs registrants in various ways. This includes emails, reports, and newsletters. The CMLPSK publishes a newsletter at least 3 times each year that is circulated to all registrants.
The CMLPSK conducts an annual financial audit of accounts and transactions. This is a requirement outlined in s. 14(1)(d) of the MLT Act with details of this requirement further outlined in s. 7 of the Administrative Bylaws.
The audited financial report is also circulated to all registrants and presented the CMLPSK Annual Report meeting.
The CMLPSK website has a consolidated searchable document library. You can search for the documents you require by searching for a portion of the document name at the bottom of each page of the website. A document list will be displayed and you can select the document your require.
